It also happens that employers dismiss employees on the basis of certain characteristics and this constitutes discrimination. To prevent this, the General Equal Treatment Act came into force in 2006. The aim of the law is to prevent or eliminate discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual identity. No employee may be disadvantaged on these grounds unless different treatment is exceptionally justified.
